Gathered Around: Legacy, Craft and the Philadelphia Table

As the winds pick up and the light shifts toward the golden tones of late autumn, life naturally turns inward. Families gather, kitchens fill with warmth, and tables once again become the heart of the home. It’s a season of reflection and reconnection — a time when the pieces we live with every day reveal their deeper stories.

At Huston & Company, we often speak about craftsmanship and design, but just as important are the relationships that unfold around the furniture we build. Few pieces hold as much history and heart as the Philadelphia Table — one of our Signature Designs and a true emblem of enduring family connection.

Philadelphia Table

The first Philadelphia Table was built in 1991 for a client based in Philadelphia — hence its name. Crafted in cherry, it embodied everything we value: elegant proportion, honest materials, and lasting integrity. Its elliptical shape encourages conversation and closeness, comfortably seating six, while the subtle inlay detail at the top of each leg adds just enough formality to feel timeless.

Over the years, that original table has become more than a piece of furniture — it’s become part of the family’s story. Decades later, the client’s children have returned to Huston & Company to commission furniture of their own, sharing memories of family dinners and holidays gathered around the Philadelphia Table they grew up with. Their continued connection speaks to what we’ve always believed: what’s built with care, endures.

Since that first commission, we’ve crafted many Philadelphia Tables — each carrying its own story, its own gathering of moments. In the late 1990s, we built another for a family in Ogunquit, Maine, this time in birdseye maple, a rare and striking wood known for its swirling, almost shimmering grain. That table, too, has hosted countless family meals and still stands proudly at the center of their home. As their children grew and created homes of their own, they continued the tradition, choosing Huston & Company pieces to anchor their family spaces — a beautiful testament to the lasting value of a well-made table.

Stories like these remind us that a table is more than furniture. It becomes an heirloom — a touchstone for memory, laughter, and love shared across generations.

As fall unfolds and families gather once more, we’re reminded that integrity in craft mirrors integrity in relationship. The Philadelphia Table, and so many pieces like it, carry the quiet promise that what’s built with care, truly endures.
